Hot Rod Music

Distinguished by their vocal harmonies, adolescent-oriented lyrics, and musical ingenuity, The Beach Boys are one of the most influential acts of the rock era. They drew on the music of older pop vocal groups, 1950s rock and roll, and black R&B to create their unique sound. Under Brian Wilson's direction, they often incorporated classical or jazz elements and unconventional recording techniques in innovative ways. The Beach Boys' first album, Surfin' Safari, was released in October 1962. It was different from other rock albums of the time in that it consisted almost entirely of original songs. Another unusual feature of the Beach Boys was that, although they were marketed as "surf music", their repertoire bore little resemblance to the music of other surf bands, which was mainly instrumental and incorporated heavy use of spring reverb. For this reason, some of the Beach Boys' early local performances had young audience members throwing vegetables at the band, believing that the group were poseurs. Today’s song, from the Surfin’ Safari album, is credited for initiating the hot rod music craze of the 1960s.
